assessment and accreditation – the missing pieces in the open education world?

Stephen Downes shares his thoughts on assessment. I very much agree
with much of what he says and think that this is an area where we will
see a lot of movement in the next few years.

Some time ago, I proposed to the United Nations University to become a
global assessment and accreditation provider. While it would have had
to deal with all the same structural problems of assessment, such a service would
have increased the value of existing open education resources to users
tremendously. The UNU was not convinced that it should play this role
at the time.

Hi Werutz: I am by no means an expert on SQL or database programming, so I wouldn’t be able to point you to the best open educational resources on the topic.

The mysql project has a number of mailing lists (http://lists.mysql.com/) that could probably help with your question. Also, just participating in the mailing list and raising questions, and helping answer other peoples’ questions, is a tremendous learning experience. In a large study conducted by UNU-MERIT (http://www.merit.unu.edu), many developers mentioned that learning and sharing knowledge were key motivating factors for their participation.
